We are grateful for the support of Tempus Facility Management in 2023. As a result of their very generous sponsorship we
were able to offer more in 2023 for the National Championships and Burnham Week.
The Sandhopper, designed in the 1970's by Oliver Lee, still offers excellent sailing and is currently the largest One Design fleet on the Thames Estuary providing:
Racing with crew of two or three.
Leisure sailing with the family.
Bilge keel hull design for drying moorings.
All at a very affordable cost and low maintenance.
The Class Association was reformed in 1997 as the Sandhopper Class British Association following a resurgence of interest in the Class and a strong desire of the owners of the original 40 boats to protect the One Design status.
The Sandhopper is the shallow draft version of the Squib Keelboat. She has the same delightful handling qualities as the Squib, being feather light on the helm at all times and has the added advantage of being able to lay safely on exposed moorings which dry out at low tide, with its lower draft and GRP twin bilge keels.
The underwater lines of the hull are as fine as possible to give good performance in light airs and the sections above the water line are flared out to a generous beam of 1.87m (6’2″) combined with a ballast ratio of 55 gives ample stability and power to carry full sail in the strongest of winds.
2024 Sandhopper Events
Maylandsea Bay Sailing Club, Welcomes visiting Sandhopper's, Boats, Helms and Crews for the a fantastic opportunity to sail on the River Blackwater to compete against the Maylandsea fleet in advance of the SCBA Nationals.
Last year we had 17 boats on the start line at TBYC for what was one of the best years for the National Championships in over a decade, with visiting boats from Maylandsea in 2021, 2022 & 2023 Can we continue to grow the event back to what it used to be with 30+ on the start line?
This will be the third year that we have returned to Burnham week after an 18 years gap, and what a welcome we have been given. Thank you so much to the RCYC and everyone involved with the event, we had 7 boats on the start for all three races for 2022 and 2023 Hopefully can have many more in 2024.

Lonton and Gray builds upon the combined vast knowledge and skill of Dick Lonton and Ian Gray, resulting in over 50 years of experience. This, coupled with an extensive practical sailing experience makes Lonton & Gray arguably one of the most experienced and respected sailmakers on the East Coast of England.
They pride themselves in quality and customer service, all of their sails are computer designed and manufactured in their loft on the East Coast of England.
1st, 2nd & 3rd at the 2019 Championship and the 2108 Championship. In fact, the top 4 all used Hyde sails. Peter Thompson & Mark Dell won the championship but were pushed very hard by Alex Farrell & Steve Hopper. Hyde Sails own Dave Hall sailed with Steve Hopper at the 2108 event and took third place.
Since the rule change the current Mainsail and Genoa are now made in white 5.52 Polykote. A very hard wearing and stable cloth ideal for the conditions and use the Sandhopper sails require
Hyde will continue to be involved with the Sandhopper, it has a place in Hyde’s history in that the company has its roots in the corner of the UK where Hyde’s first loft was based.
Hyde Sails are known in the fleet for their consistency in shape and reliability and are the best value sails available

TBYC has circa 30 boats afloat at any time and has had since the early 1970's. They are used for racing, cruising and one can often be seen with a catch of fish!
Maylandsea Bay Sailing Club, has had a fleet of Sanhoppers since the 1970's and has had ever since. They have up to 10 boats afloat and regularly have these out racing and cruising the wonderful surroundings of the River Blackwater.
There are boats in all sorts of locations accross the country as you would expect, given that these have been produced since the 1970's and there appears to only be one we cannot trace. If you have the details of a boat and have not been in touch with the association before or for a while please let us know where the boat is and who the current owner is.
